I'd rather see other players traded for high picks before Iginla.
That being said, if he wants to go, or if an obvious trade for good talent is there as a return, then Ok. But do people think that wade simmonds is going to be worth getting rid of Iginla? Maybe if we could get a pick that would land us McKinnon or an obvious future star. But I think what many are talking about equates to a gamble, or just a worse team in the future.
The next 4 years with Iginla will be better than having a team with no leader and hoping for things to turn around.

1. They would be going in a direction that doesn't see a 35 year old winger as the best player and primary offensive option on the team.
2. The next best leader on the team would be captain. We may not have a captain for a year or two. We're not lifting the cup in that span, so there's no rush.
3. Trading iginla to get his replacement is not really an option at this point. You trade him to get some value back, and change the team's culture. You can't let him go for nothing, and he isn't going to re-sign to play on a team with one natural center.
4. We are going to be bad for a while. With or without Iggy. Since we know that having Iggy as our best player has left us out of the playoffs for three years, going to be four, I would say it's clear that with or without him, it can't get a whole lot worse.
5. We're going to have a look at a top five pick this year, especially if we sell at deadline; the assets should be in place to draft a true franchise impacting center in June, and shedding extra salary allows the team to make a run at Getzlaf if he's available. And do you want four more years of Iggy, or seven years of Getzlaf?
Look, we all realize it sucks. Breaking up is hard to do. But if your relationship hasn't been working for three years, do you want to spend another three or four hoping it works out, or would you rather cut bait and get on with your life?
