I always look at it as if you switch Indiana's and Gonzaga's schedule how would they do? Odds are Indiana would have the same record as Gonzaga (probably even be 29-0) playing the Zags schedule, but Gonzaga would likely have 3-6 more losses playing Indiana's schedule. Unfortunetly when you play in a weak conference, you play a weak schdule, and when you lose your only two matchups against top-20 teams, it doesn't speak well for you.
Besides even if Gonzaga gets to #1 so what? This isn't football where they need to be #1 or #2 to have a chance at the championship. If they get to #1 and get bounced against a 16 seed in the tournament, getting to #1 means less than nothing.
