Even if we did get a young player with top 6 potential, with the free agency age being 27, there is no guarantee that the player would be around by the time the rebuild starts to bear fruit. And I know I don't have to mention that late 1st round draft picks are anything but a sure thing.
As someone else mentioned, at least Iginla has the element of being an ambassador. He loves Calgary and can sell other players on it. He has value to the franchise besides just what he does on the ice.

I disagree, he does have value. People were writing him off before last Olympics, even the coaches had him playing on the bottom line but look at who came through in the end? He is in great shape so put him on a line which he doesn't to carry and watch out.
As far as people being disappointed, there will be a huge part of this fan base that will not even care about the return, they'll be sad to see Iggy go and probably jump off the bandwagon. There'll be another part of the fan base that will be excited for a new start, no more one step forward two step backwards. You trade Iggy you're telling everyone we're re-building, a new hope.
