I haven't been in the high-end headphone market for a while as I'm still using my HD650's from over a decade ago. One thing to be careful about, since you're using these for travel, is some of the high end headphones and arguably all of the best one's require amplification. My HD650 sounds like garbage without an amp - not enough power to drive the thing.

Unless you own or plan to purchase a portable amp, look into that before you buy. Your laptop/iDevice will not be able to power some of the high ends - especially since you're quoting prices upwards of $800.
