Out of curiousity, what are the logistics for flying from Utica to Calgary? I am assuming that there aren't daily direct flights. Do you have to drive to Syracuse, then fly to New York or Toronto, then to Calgary?
At least in Abbotsford, there are a few daily direct flights from both the Vancouver and Abbotsford airports. But then again, maybe Uitica would make up for it when the Flames are on the road in the U.S.

There are lots of options. Just taking a quick look at the map of upstate NY, there are lots of major cities in the area - the closest being Buffalo which is about 3 hours away. NYC is about 4 hours away, same with Boston. Montreal is about 4.5 hours away. Kingston is just under 3 hours away. There are definitely options.
