This is the oiler way. They thought they where good, and kept all the assets they had, and kept adding yet tanking.
We need to sell off while we can, and get something in return to help speed up the rebuild, while icing a team that can actually compete.
This team is poorly constructed as the Darryl Sutter 20 goal scorer all stars he put out, and everyone though each player would bounce back and score 20 goals.
This team sucks, and it needs to be destroyed and rebuilt.

That's not what I'm suggesting. I'm just stating the obvious -- how much more can we blow up one of the worst teams in the league? I agree that we suck, by the way.
The Oilers model was not what you have described; they actually cleaned house and thought they could simply draft their way to the top. And they still suck, not because they don't have talent, but because they don't have the right mix of players.
