I regret agreeing to play as a sub for a floor hockey team years ago. A guy slid into me and took me out at the knees – causing me to tear my ACL and do a bunch of other damage. I ended up having two surgeries, and spending close to 20 grand in medical costs.
At this point, the impact on my daily quality of life is minimal – some minor knee discomfort, but no visible limp most days (for a while I did walk with a limp).
However, I’m no longer able to play the sports I love – hockey, basketball, football, tennis are all off the table. I used to play sports 3-5 times a week – and loved it. It was my favourite thing to do. Not being able to do that anymore really sucks, but the risks involved in me trying to do it again are just too steep.
I really miss it though – and in fact I have recurring dreams where I’m back playing sports again. I’ve been unable to find a substitute in my life that gives me the same enjoyment and rush that sports did.
