Sorry everybody for the third consecutive post! But whet I have s#!- to so say I speak.
Does anybody think the oilers followed a plan to get 3 #1 picks in a row? They were poorly managed (and yet their GM was promoted, but that's beside the point).
Does anybody think that Pittsburgh planned to have so many #1 and #2 picks? They were in money trouble to the point where the owner was forced out of retirement to come and play and draw fans. He considered selling to a man who wanted to move the team. And he drew a lucky ping pong ball to draft his franchise player. Not to mention that a major arena issue worked itself out.
Does anybody think Chicago planned on being horrible? Absolutely not. They tried to be bottom spenders until suddenly: they won a cup. They even fired the GM who built the cup team.
The La kings didn't rebuild on purpose.
I don't agree with their decisions, but even when the canucks missed the playoffs, the didn't trade everybody off to rebuild. Unless u count Keenan trading linden for bertuzzi and McCabe.
I'm telling u. Nobody plans to be bad and trade everybody and then succeeds. They trade people because they have to. And they don't usually get long term value for it.
Trading superstars is usually about a 1 in 10 proposition, in terms of success. Who did the oilers trade: Smyth! And got garbage.
My point after all this rambling: nobody plans to rebuild, they are forced. And when they are forced. It still takes a long time (ask the Toronto Maple loops).
The best plan is: try your best. Acquire the best talent you can by any means necessary. And then pray.
