Nope they have to basically immobilize it for a month or so, then its very light work.
I had a friend of mine who had his ankle stepped on during a football game, it was a totally flukey pay, but his AT snapped and rolled half way up his leg. If there was anyone screaming to be knocked out from the pain it was him.
He was on crutches for a long long time, and then he walked with a noticeable limp for about 4 months where he went through as he described it the most painful rehab ever.
When he was finally allowed to walk it hurt for a long time and he couldn't run because as he stated his leg felt so tight that he thought it would snap.
Now this was about 10 years ago and I'm sure that the surgery and rehab are much better, but I wouldn't wish that kind of injury on anyone.
