That's not entirely true. Many NHL teams were drafting Russians in 1998, there were 2 taken in the first round and 22 taken in the draft. Datsyuk was a total diamond in the rough, it has been thought that the Red Wings were the
only team to see him play prior to the draft, so I don't think other teams knew about him
