What are you going to do besides sanctions? Which by the way don't work on a country who has pounded the message of self reliance into the heads of their people over the last 3 generations. When Kim Jong-Il died and we saw the people crying in the streets that was a genuine emotion, they are so controlled and indoctrinated that they believe that what they have is better then anyone else. For the most part if you read defector stories they rarely have a hate on for the government and the Kim's and are shocked at what they see in the free world.

Plus sanctions don't work because we always back down due to the human suffering there.

Lets be really clear about the mindset, the detonation of a nuclear device is a negotiating tactic by that government, something that Kim Jung-Un has been highly educated in. The expectation is that the outsiders including China will give in on something in exchange for curtailing their nuclear program.

If going back to sanctions everyone cuts off aid supply, the government and the Kim's won't care, they've got room 43 (I think its 43) they'll eat well. The peasant class can be sacrificed and is willing to sacrifice in exchange for the concept of Juche.

You can't invade them, yes their army is antiquated now but the summer isn't good for armored mobility and the winter is man killing. Combine that with the Northern Artillary belt that makes Soeul and millions of people vanish in about 10 minutes of continuous firing. On top of that the North will use its huge and highly trained special forces units to not only sow destruction in the South, but fight a brutal insurgency battle in the North that will make the Iraqi and Afghanistan insurgency look like 4 guys with fire crackers.

Kim Jung-Un and his family form a nearly untouchable mafia, there will never be a people's uprising because they feel great love for the leaders due to decades of harsh indoctrination, and on top of that fear of North Korean intelligence and their justice system.

The only way that government topples is when the last Kim family member dies. But that is a difficult job as they have taken paranoia and security way past what a Hussien did. We'd never get to him.
