I'd rather prospects go through a winning environment and earn their stripes than be thrown to the wolves and suffer through disappointment after disappointment. A winning pedigree means more to me than prospects individual counting stats.
Of course, I have no idea which type of system actually yields better results... It seems to me that Hersey is always a winning team in the AHL, but I don't know if their prospects translated that to big leagues since Washington is basically as bad as the Flames this year.
I wonder if there has been some research into this..

I don't think going 100% one way or the other is the answer. Like most things in life the middle way is the way to success.
Having said that IMO Ward should have stuck with Irving until he regained his form. Irving was more valuable to the Flames for this season than a few games lost in the AHL. Than again obviously, Ward knows more about the situation than I do.
