His job, in my opinion is to find the good ones and keep those while letting the bad ones go. He doesn't need to be a jerk and cut them off or anything like that, a subtle "thanks for the call" is all good and move on to the next guy. To me, bad callers kill a show.
The producer or screener is a real big part of this as well. It's not all on Pat. I don't screen calls anymore, but when I did, it wasn't tough to get a good read on whether or not a guy was a solid caller or not. There'd be plenty of times where I'd write "DONT TAKE" on the phone board.
Just my opinion though, Pat's the host, it's his show.
