Players mature as they get older and sometimes that cockiness is replaced with humility. From what i've read lately from Irving himself, he comes across as person who believes he has earned nothing and has to prove his worth. A cocky player wouldn't be saying to the media that he was going to look at the game films from the Vancouver game and see where he could imporve his game.
Threats of going to Europe were probably a bargaining ploy with the Flames. If he was serious he would have left for Europe.
