Make no mistake the Flames will not offer Iginla as much as he will get on the open market and if Iginla chooses to stay a Flame at a discount we will know all we need to on just how bad Iginla really wants to win a cup.

Whether we like it or not the flames are very clear on what path they are on. They don't want a full rebuild and want to build from the draft. They have never wavered from the fact they want Iggy to remain a flame for life. Conroy this summer said that Iggy told him that he was in "wait and see mode". Would the path change if Iggy wanted a trade? Probably. But as for now the path is compete for playoffs with Iggy while drafting well.

As for "blank cheque" i would not go that far. I would say that ownership will probably pay him for past accomplishments. I would not offer Iggy anymore than a 3 year $15 million contract. I can easily see the flames offering him 4 years at $24 million. Could he get more than that on the open market? Probably, but i believe any team that gives him the $24 million or more is going to regret it big time in the last couple of years of that contract.
