I think sometimes people forget the context of some of these deals. The Regehr trade was not a trade to acquire certain players they wanted, it was purely to dump salary. Remember, Kotalik was included in the deal and the Flames even had to give up a 2nd to do so. If this trade didn't happen, Tanguay wasn't getting re-signed:

The Phaneuf deal was made in the midst of a brutal losing streak and it was obviously deemed unnecessary to have three 'top 2' d-men when the team couldn't score. Stajan was supposed to bring 50 points, Hagman 25 goals, and White supposed to take Dion's place. Obviously it was a disaster and the team should have at least gotten a pick out of it instead.
With Iginla, there's no real pressing reason to trade him at this point. The team is clearly trying to stay competitive and re-build the farm system over a number of years at the same time. The only real reasons would be if he says flat out that he won't re-sign or if another team knocks your socks off with an offer.
