I don't think I'm giving him a free ride, the fact is there was nothing wrong with the idea of putting a native in the Senate, it was something that was needed and Harper has stated that natives need to be better represented in government.
Its true that our friend had been investigated for sexual harrasment before but it had been dropped, he was also the golden boy among native choices when he was put into the Senate.
Harper can't really toss him out of the Senate but he did the only thing that he could do which is throw him out of the party..
The Liberal's and NDP screaming that he should be thrown out of the Senate yesterday seem to be clueless about the Senate dismissal process. Also demanding that he pay back the money is foolish as the investigation into the tax free income stuff has just started and not been concluded.
Harper can take stronger actions on a conviction, he can also take stronger actions on the fraud stuff once the investigation is completed.
the failure here is the vetting process.
