I see nothing wrong with forcing prisoners to work manual labour while they are in prison. Not only is it productive, but it allows them to pay for themselves. Plus you'd be surprised how little energy people have to join gangs, rape, deal drugs, assault others, etc... after a hard day of labour.
I understand the notion of civil rights, but prisoners, by definition, have already forfeighted many rights. The ability to integrate yourself into and maintain a regular work schedule should go a lot further than "good behviour" towards an early release.
