Ignore this advice; for even the most dedicated luddite, there really is no good reason for doing this, and plenty of reasons why not to.

1. When consumer targeted OEM PCs are delivered with a newer OS, it becomes an incredible pain in the ass (especially for normal end-users) to try and downgrade them to previous versions, much more so than a business targeted machine. You'll spend most of your time fussing about trying to find drivers and if you have issues, you're on your own.

2. If you really need the classic Start Menu, use Start8.

3. If you have software that is not compatible with Windows 8, upgrade to Windows 8 Pro and run your program in a Windows 7 Hyper-V virtual machine instead. If it's a game, wait for a patch or check the forums for workarounds. But there really isn't much that's been released in the past five years that doesn't work with Windows 8.
