10 out of 10 ktichen staff I worked with wouldn't/couldn't handle dealing with the public for any amount of money. Just as I would shoot myself if I had to work all day, standing in one spot in a hot kitchen.

As for praise, it works both ways. Except if the kitchen screws up, the server gets screwed too. The customer doesn't say, "well, my food was burned and took an hour, but here's a little something for you". That money comes out of their pocket, to pay the kitchen, no matter who made the mistake.
I have done both before I went to university. Being a server is way more cushier than working in the kitchen. Neither is as good as bartending though. 90% of being a server is being good looking and well groomed. I bet if someone did a study, there would be a direct correlation between how much a customer will put up with and how they tip, with how good looking their server is.

But in reality, they all suck. The whole restaurant industry is what made me decide to finally go back to school.
