They connect to the mail server in two different ways. iPhone uses Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync and the Blackberry uses the Blackberry Enterprise Server (BES). From what I've read, you can't re-use your old BES infrastructure, you need to get their new one so that negates that as a cost-savings.
Going to get a presentation tomorrow about Blackberry going forward so we'll see how that goes. We're on full BYOD mode but the company will still issue corporate Blackberrys or iPhones depending on user choice. Almost everybody but the old guard has gone for the iPhone so far.
