It is false.
Most witch hunts occurred in Protestant regions. Germany, Switzerland, English colonies (the last major one in Salem, a Puritan colony), etc... Catholic nations, like France, Italian States, and Ireland had very few witch trials during those years.
In the story, at one point as background information, it is says that witch trials were orchestrated by the Catholic church, which is simply not true. Puritans and Calvinists were responsible for most.
