"Slightly" better league is an understatement. Players that dominate a league move up to a better one, that's just how it works.
One way or the other Gaudreau is never going to jump straight to the NHL. He needs to get accustomed to the higher level of play and the compact schedules. The only reason he stays in the NCAA is to gain size and obviously his education. And he can gain size and focus more on the hockey side of things if he comes up to the AHL/NHL anyways.
Either way I take John Weisbrod's opinion over yours.
