The first Dune is good. After that it drifts way too far into science fantasy and just generally becomes way too unrealistic for my tastes.
Btw, since this is a thread where someone might be interested, Louis McMaster-Bujolds Vorkosigan-books are much more interesting as scifi than they might appear at first glance. If you have a taste for not-very-far-fetched speculativ societies, I highly recommend her books.
I think she's ignored a lot because her style is generally rather light-hearted space opera, and because she is more well thought-out than far-out.
