As far as the rest of the fanbase goes, the last time the team was really bad was over a decade ago and I would have been in high school. I don't really remember remarking on the behaviour of the fanbase.

Did you even read what I wrote? What I'm talking about is not whether people cheer harder when they're winning. I'm talking about people not being able to satisfy themselves watching their own team and having to derive their hockey enjoyment elsewhere - namely by cheering against teams they hate. The longer and more significant the malaise, the more this gains steam and the fans become more concerned with the misfortunes of teams they don't like than the fortunes of their own team (which are too depressing to be worth it).

I find TONS of examples of my theory here precisely BECAUSE this is a message board and no one feels any need to tone down ire or bile on the internet generally regardless of the topic of discussion.
So basically you are basing your theory on the fact that hardcore fans get very worked up when their team is not doing well and doesn't "tone down bile" or something of the sort? Based on your last statement this seems to be the case no?

I find Flames hockey just as enjoyable when they lose, sure it's not as much fun in the sense that everyone wants their team to win the cup but it's hockey all the same, short of the team turning into an Olympic team of divers like the Canucks I'll cheer for this team win or lose, what is this nonsense about "how long will they derive enjoyment"?

I'll also go out on a limb and say that the vast majority of fans that post here find this Flames hockey much more enjoyable than the past few seasons under Brent. Honestly if people kept watching Flames hockey and enjoyed it then, this new system is significantly more entertaining. What does the other point you are trying to make even mean? Seriously? When do fans take to cheering against their rivals? I hate to say it but in just about any sport and every team, most fans HATE their rivals and cheer for anyone playing against them. How your own team is doing has no bearing on this. Seriously what exactly are you trying to get at? I ALWAYS enjoy seeing the Coilers or Divers lose, how the Flames are doing makes no impact on that. Are you suggesting it does?
