I don't think the gun fanatics are even trying to deceive anyone anymore about the hunting aspect. They simply say they want them for (better) self defense as they are easier to shoot, and you can take out a bad person with a gun, much more effectively.
Or as Alex Jones says, they are fun to shoot.
