I disagree with this. Granted, the shortened season certainly reduces the time and space allowable for teams to make mistakes, but by the same token, it is also that much easier to correct what might be relatively construed as an insurmountable hole. While the Flames have played +10% of the regular season and are currently at the bottom of the Western Conference, they are also five points out of a playoff spot with a game in hand.
I'm not predicting that the team will get there, but I certainly do not think that it is an impossibility by any stretch of the imagination. The fact of the matter is that even marginal teams can string together a 105-point pace for stretches of games, and in a shortened season these sorts of anomalies do create possibilities for even a team like the Flames to make the playoffs.
