How about:
Reporter: So would a gay football player be welcome on the team
Player: Sure, why not. If someone can contribute to the team, who cares if they're gay.
Reporter: Do you think gay players should keep their orientation secret
Player: Like I said, it doesn't matter to me. Unfortunately gay players probably do feel that they need to keep it a secret, but hopefully that isn't always the case.

Look at it this way. Would it be okay if one guy was showering in a locker room full of chicks? Or is the idea of being naked around someone who might be sexually attracted to you really uncomfortable? Regardless of your sexual orientation or your cultural attitudes, that makes EVERYONE'S sphincter tighten.
Furthermore, it's not like the guy comes from a super tolerant, open minded environment in the first place, and he makes his living in the most hyper masculine sport in the world.
I'm sure he doesn't really hate gay people, but im also pretty sure he has no frame of reference for dealing with them and the mere thought of it disturbs him. Which is fine.
