If you go to NYC or even the old districs of European cities do you think they have the same attitude? That everything should be mom & pop? Not at all. You see all types of conglomerates occupying the first floor of urban apartments. Only in places that didn't naturally develop into "urban" neighbourhoods do you see this type of attitude.
It's all fake. It's planned. It's a planned hipster HQ.
I mean if you really want that lifestyle thats great, but I'm of the unpopular opinion that I can't stand being surrounded by that type of Pretentious enviroment.

I don't know about the European cities you're referring to, but the majority of small stores occupying the first floor of residential buildings in NYC are indeed mom & pop type operations. There has been an increasing trend of stores like 7-11, but even their entry has been opposed by many community boards. Overall you don't see anywhere near as many "conglomerates" in NYC as you do in any other city, there's still not even a Wal-Mart.
