We have a system where we both hive off an appropriate amount of our paychecks into a fund we use for home improvement. We both make our own lists of what's actually needed and then we assign priorities to them. Things that show up on both our lists will get bought/taken care of first and I will actually partake in the acquisition / preparation part of it. With the money that's left over she can go to town at homesense / ikea / whatever under the pre-condition that these are things I do not give a fata about and therefore my participation is optional. Same goes the other way if there's things I feel strongly about that do not make her list. In practice of course my list tends to be much shorter, so while she's out at Crossiron Mills I can drink beer and watch hockey!
