I sold my Jeep in the summer on Kijiji. From the seller perspective, I was a real dink in making sure that there was a money order or cash for the amount of the car, and the guy had to bring in his own plates and give me mine back before he drove away with the vehicle. If they wanted me to take it to a mechanic, i would have, but there was no way I was going to take it to some guy's house or back yard garage and leave my vehicle there. I would have wanted some assurance that the mechanic was legit and wasn't going to screw up my car for a cheaper sale.
If I were to be buying, I'd go to the AMA or Service Alberta website and print off one of the Bill of Sale forms and have it with me, so that I knew there were no hidden terms or statements. I'd also have the name and number of the mechanic handy and see about getting one close to the person's house. You will want a Carfax or similar search for sure, and ask about the history of the vehicle, how many owners, what dealership, where maintenance was done, etc. When filling out the bill of sale, ask to see the driver's licence and put down exactly how it is written in the licence.
