Even if think Manti Te'o later discovered it was all a hoax and ran with it for the attention, Te'o really did think before that Michigan State game that his grandmother died and his 'girlfriend' died on the same day. Or, if you think Te'o was in on the hoax the whole time, he still had to deal with the death of his grandmother before that game. He played pretty well in that Michigan State game, and for the rest of the regular season.

Don't give him too much credit. That game was against quite possibly the worst passing offense in the country and against a banged up and outmatched offensive line. A competent MLB would have looked great, which actually goes for a number of ND games this season. When he faced an elite team he looked below average at best.
