It happens all the time in the capped world to players not considered to be part of the core moving forward.

If Detroit saw him as a valuable member of the core moving forward, Holland would have signed him. Breaking for the paltry difference of 500K? Especially considering the salary space Detroit opened up?

Hence the Olli analogy. Good player, got a lot of points, a lot of fans liked him, but he wasn't considered to be invaluable moving forward. That Hudler in a nutshell

Thats all fine and dandy, but i would suggest that the Flames were never serious about bringing oj back, but Hudler was indeed someone holland wanted, but only at a rate he was willing to pay.

Both guys likely fill needs for their respective teams now however and that skews any $$ amounts either received from their respective clubs.

All this though is moot as to the original point you were attempting to make...that being that detroit did try and re-sign Hudler which was opposite of what you claimed and what Text was asking about.
