Either player would have signed for less to stay with their respective teams, both were good players.

to players not considered to be part of the core moving forward.
If Detroit saw him as a valuable member of the core moving forward, Holland would have signed him. Breaking for the paltry difference of 500K? Especially considering the salary space Detroit opened up?
Hence the Olli analogy. Good player, got a lot of points, a lot of fans liked him, but he wasn't considered to be invaluable moving forward. That Hudler in a nutshell
