I think that the Flames have started a rebuild, only it is not the same "scorched-earth" approach that the Oilers have made popular. Rather, pretty dramatic changes have been taking place in terms of team personnel and drafting and development. These sorts of changes are not attention-grabbing like what the Oilers have done, but strong arguments can be made that they will be at least as effective.
As for Iginla, I'm not sure what you want or what you expect at this point. Granted, the Flames could have probably received a pretty high return of players and picks a few years back, but there were no guarantees of this even at the time when Iginla's stock was at its peak. Now? I think that the question of Iginla's trade value is a matter that needs to be addressed, and carefully weighed, but I expect that many fans will be extremely disappointed by what he would command in a trade over the course of this season. The truth of the matter is that the Flames might actually be better off keeping Iginla through the rebuild at this point in his career.

Again, I think that this is highly debatable. It really doesn't do much good at this point to whine about what you think could have been.

Like I always say I'm a fan of the Crest on the front of the jersey not the one on the back!
I'm often fairly astonished at how accurately some fans seem to think they can predict what will transpire over the course of a half-decade. Honestly, this is nonsense. In truth, there is really no way to be very sure at all about how the future will play out for the Flames, because there are far too many variables in play. Quite to he contrary, I do not see the future so dimly. I am actually encouraged by an improving prospect base, and while the Flames have a ways to go towards ensuring a solid, high-quality, full and balanced collection of young talent, they are starting to make some very positive moves in that direction.

It is probably much more accurate to predict that there could be a year or two or maybe three of painful, on-ice futility while the Flames move through this part of the inevitable cycle, but I hardly think that things are anywhere near as dire as your tone suggests.
