I argued with an FS guy about this that was trying to push expensive HDMI cables on a friend.
Seriously, the only thing that could possibly arise from a cheap cable is that it breaks after too many removals and insertions (Virgin Auction thread allusion noted). That probably isn't likely for a person who connects it and leaves it alone, and even then Winners or Memory Express type places would take it back and replace it.
I would like to think that people just buy expensive HDMI cables because of convenience and not bothering to educate themselves or look for less expensive options.
