The noise radiated by an Ohio is quieter then the noise of the water around it. The Soviets and then Russians have experimented with a large aperture sonar married to a computer that actually looks for holes in the water. If you can find the hole and track its movements its a good chance that its a sub.

There have been very few Ohio's that have been tracked for longer then 5 minutes, and that includes American's tracking their own boats.
