the Alpha was designed to almost be like a fighter interceptor, it was almost as fast as the torpedos that were fired at it, but it was noisy, the automation suite made it dangerous and the reactor wasn't very good, but because of its Titanium hull it had a crush depth at 1300 m. to put that into perspective the Virgina's crush depth is around 800 meters.
A high speed very quiet missile boat has a huge advantage in that it can remain undetected, but if it is detected it can still use its high speed and quieting to clear the area.
