I'd just say keep it simple and re-name it subtlety to "john's clothiers". Continues the family tradition, not wild changes, but yet not tied to just men's apparel.

Plus, in a town like that, coming up with some new psuedo-modern name and re-brand may seem a little too "big city sell out" for some....people in town know it for the last 50 years as "john's" and they'll still know it as "john's".
