You don't need to go to Maui or the Big Island to get away from crowds on Oahu, just leave the resort area and stay away from Honolulu.
My wife and son and I drove around the island and similar stuff to what I remember from Big Island/Maui (though I loved them both) can be found all over Oahu. Serene peaceful beaches, quiet towns, relaxing hikes, quiet. If you liked Lost, we had fun finding all the filming locations we could. My favourite was the deserted beach near Haleiwa (papailoa beach). Felt like i'd been there before because of the show. Not a person on the beach except for us and the turtles. Of course you can't swim in the winter there, but it was still deserted and lovely to sit on for a few hours. And the turtles are everywhere.
