The JT8D is a wonderful engine, exceptionally tough and reliable.
#2 on the 727 was prone to compressor stall in some crosswind conditions due to the intake design. It was also possible if one of the compressor bleeds stuck open. Boy it could make a tremendous bang, people nearby usually hit the deck as it sounded like a big old shotgun amplified 10 fold.
