Baloney... You can pull of shirt and tie with no jacket without liking like a bank teller in many ways. Choice of materials, patterns and styles, not to mention accessories can take you far far away from bank teller land. (in good and bad directions).
For example, I have a pretty basic Hilfiger button down shirt with orange and blue vertical stripes that I wear with a fairly skinny slightly shiny dark blue tie.. It may not be haute couture, but it looks fine and I certainly wouldn't fit in with a bank teller... (well maybe ING with this color scheme, but not really).
