I love the level scaling. It prevents a person from just slashing through the game. I hacked and slashed through the first Diablo in a weekend, and that is the reason I never bothered playing Diablo 2. Oblivion should take a huge amount of hours to complete, and that is great.
As Jordan pointed out, the point in levelling up is to get better monster with more loot. The more loot you have, and the more extrodinary weapons you have, the better you'll do.
The key to the level scaling is to stay ahead of the level curve. If you advance your character correctly, you should be able to maintain the same balance that you have at level 1 through the rest of the game because you are getting better slightly ahead of the monsters.
But, that is easier said than done. I had to start over too, just as SouloftheFlame did, because I levelled up very poorly. It wasnt that I levelled up too fast; I used the wrong skills to gain level points. The skills I became good at were not the ones I needed (or planned) to use when fighting monsters later in the game.
