I wouldn't beat yourself up over that. They were being freaks and that's alarming behaviour, but you may have escalated it by stepping in at that point. In that situation sometimes it's best to stick close by the girl in case she needs your help (i.e. you'd be pretty lame to get off the train and leave her alone with them), but at the end of the day I don't think you shirked any societal responsibility you had and since she was none the wiser it ended well.
