1. Wa's - Centre Street & 17 Ave NW, across from the Safeway on Centre Street. Best in Calgary.

2. Hana on 4th, decent but nothing spectacular.

Half-decent sushi on a budget, these are the best of the rest, all run by Chinese folks, the staff can all speak Cantonese at these places:

1. Sushi Iciban - Westbrook Mall, pretty good salmon sashimi, and 5 min from my place so these guys get a lot of my $$

2. Sakana Grill - China Town, go after 9PM for Happy Hour Mon-Thur, service is quite inconsistent though, be forewarned

3. Kyoto 17th - Cheapest in town if you get the set dinner, yet not as bad as fast food.

Stay away from:

Sushi BBQ Inn - Across from SAIT on 16th Ave, DO NOT go there, if you've been there in the past 6 months you will know why.

Sushi Tokyo - Chinatown Dragon City Mall - Really, for what you pay, your money will buy you better value elsewhere.

Osaka Sushi House - 16th Ave just off Edmonton Trail, ok for take out but the place is seriously dingy if you dine in (they are meant to be a takeout place anyways).

Zen 8 - come on, I wouldn't even try to spend my money at any of Paul Vicker's establishments. No further justification needed.
A couple thing to add (and refute) about Incinerator's post.

First of all, if Japanese owned is what you're after, a fantastic place to go is Sushi Sen on 1st SW and 10th Ave, across from Bottlescrew Bill's. It's Japanese run and is supported by the many Japanese ESL students in the area. It even features Japanese K-1 fighting on a TV in the corner! The sushi itself is fantastic, I'd say it's the #1 in the city right now. It's also on the way to the Saddledome if you're walking from downtown.

(Anyone been to Hiro Sushi on 5th? I've heard it's good too. Or Kinjo's on Macleod?)

I didn't mind Sushi Tokyo that much, and would take it over Sakana Grill - Sakana is just getting a little too dingy and dumpy IMHO, and the service is variable. Last time I was there they mopped the floors with dirty water and the entire place smelled like feet. Haven't been back since.

I eat at Zen 8 often, but that's only because it's right by my office and I work late a lot. It's OK, but overpriced, like the rest of the vickers places. Super hot waitresses though....
