If you change fear to respect, than I think you are correct in teaching your children to be cautious around ANY size dog. When we are walking our dog, some children will bolt right up and start petting him, whereas others will ask for permission to approach. To me, teach your kids to ALWAYS ask for permission to approach an animal and they should be just fine. It teaches them to use caution without causing unnecessary fear.
