This may not exactly answer your qeustion, but I have owned both and it was a preference over other breeds - until I got to know the breed, namely Rotties. Both the Rottie we had and the pitbull-cross we had were given to us by people who had their situations change and could no longer have a dog. Both were loving, wonderful pets, who we were completely comfortable having around anyone, kids, parents, etc. The Rottie even helped a friend overcome a severe fear of dogs because she was such a sweetheart.

Having said that - I would never leave any dog (big or small) unattended around a small child. I don't know the exact age where I would walk away and feel comfortable, it would depend on the situation.

I firmly believe that while these breeds do have the potential to be violent and are often bred and trained to be violent or over-protective, if raised right, by responsible, experienced dog owners, they can be your best friend.
