The Islanders (or any team who struggles to reach the floor) won't take advantage of a cap-free buyout because they want all the money they spend to count against their cap.
It will be interesting to see how it plays out, but I think the long-term deals are less likely to be bought out because it is committing a lot of money over a very long period of time for which you get nothing in return.
Buying out Lecavalier would cost the Lightning $2.1 million a year through the 2026-27 season.
The most cost-effective buyout would actually be Kipper. It would cost the Flames $500,000 for two years, and shave $5.8 million off the Flames' cap for 2013-14. It would be good for Kipper too if he wants to keep playing because he could easily sign a deal that pays him more than $1.5 million for next season. The only drawback would be that he'd no longer be a Flame.
