I may be wrong, but I don't think there's anything in Canadian law that says you can't download a movie or song. However, I do believe you can't distribute it in any way. If you're torrenting it, you're seeding, and so they can count that as "distribution".

I may be way off there, though, so don't take it as legal advice.
