You would expand the illegal gun market and not contract it with gun control.
Unless the U.S. works to break the gun culture, improve border security and create harsh sentences for gun related violent crime your not going to accomplish what you want to.
Right now one of the biggest problems are the gun shows and buying unregistered guns there. Imagine a lot more of these gun markets happening in a black market environment.

True but it would also drive the price sky high and they still have to risk getting them through customs, security, etc. IMO it's one more step to take that might give that person a chance to cool down.
